In his book, The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins claims that if a person does not believe in evolution they are either evil or ignorant. Quite a choice—so much for academic tolerance! The question of evolution really boils down to evidence. Unfortunately, the worldview of evolution is so entrenched, that to even question the very concept of evolution is tantamount to being declared insane. But what is the evidence? We’re told by the grandfather of evolutionary biology¬, the late Harvard zoologist, Ernst Mayr, that evolution is true beyond question. Yet, more and more academics are writing and questioning the very foundations of Darwinian evolution.

Ernst Mayr tell us in his final book, What is Evolution? (2002), that the fossil record does not support slow gradual evolution. In 1984, Dr. Fred Hoyle, the British atheist and astronomer, wrote his strange book, Evolution from Space, in which he said that the fossil record “leaks like a sieve” and did not show evidence of slow, gradual change. Hoyle then argued for his view—panspermia—namely that aliens populated our planet with frozen bacteria in a space ship! And…a belief in special creation takes a lot of faith!?

Back in 1986, Michael Denton, an Australian biochemist (and agnostic) wrote his classic, Evolution: A Theory in Crisis. Since then, many others have jumped on the bandwagon. One of the strangest is Stephen Hawking’s book, The Grand Design, in which he claims that we don’t need God to explain the universe, but goes on to say how remarkably “designed” the whole universe seems. One of this final chapters is entitled, The Apparent Miracle. Apparent!?

But…many protest…everyone from Nat Geo to Disney World knows that evolution is true! But if so, why have so many “secular” scientists criticized its very foundations while offering nothing in its place?! Maybe it’s because the only viable alternative—a personal God who created us—is simply unbelievable to them, or at least unacceptable to modern man. Maybe a God who loves us, but also holds us accountable on judgment day, is the real driving force behind the theory of evolution that rids the universe of a personal deity.
