Confronting the Bible’s Critics: Meet Rebecca McLaughlin
Rebecca McLaughlin has an interesting set of personal coordinates. She is an evangelical Christian with a PhD in Renaissance Literature from Cambridge and is endorsed by The Gospel Coalition. She has also struggled with same sex attraction much of her life; she is now married to a man and has children. McLaughlin recently wrote a fascinating new book to answer the critics of Christianity entitled, Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion.
Some of her chapter titles include, “Aren’t We Better Off Without Religion?”, “How Could a Loving God Allow So Much Suffering?”, “Doesn’t Christianity Denigrate Women?” and “Isn’t Christianity Homophobic?” McLaughlin’s crisp prose and winsome presentation are persuasive and compelling. She has clearly spent time thinking deeply and reading on all sides of the issues.
Rebecca’s skill as an apologist for biblical Christianity is unique as she cites facts, and the text of the Bible while also utilizing Harry Potter, Dr. Who, and other examples from pop culture. Her writing feels scholarly without ever being boring or difficult to read. In short, she is a very engaging and interesting writer. I would highly recommend reading this book—whether you’re the one with the questions or someone who’s hoping to have better answers for the critics of Christianity and the Bible.
