What Does the Bible Say About Global Warming?
Climate change and global warming are all the rage for many today. They are the new sacraments of the secular agenda. What does the Bible have to say about all of this? Recently Jonathan Franzen wrote an article in the New Yorker entitled, What If We Stopped Pretending. He opens his article with these cheery words, “The climate apocalypse is coming. To prepare for it, we need to admit that we can’t prevent it. Today, the scientific evidence verges on irrefutable. If you’re younger than sixty, you have a good chance of witnessing the radical destabilization of life on Earth; massive crop failures, apocalyptic fires, imploding economies, epic flooding, hundreds of millions of refugees fleeing regions made uninhabitable by extreme heat or permanent drought. If you’re under thirty, you’re all but guaranteed to witness it.”
Wow! That is a mouthful. Not exactly the kind of thing you like to wake up to on Monday morning. Climate change is all the rage right now. It’s become the new religion of the secular left. These days we are treated to a regular litany of pessimistic gloom and doom of what is going to happen in the very near future if we do not immediately stop using hair spray, stop driving, stop flying, stop cutting down trees, stop mining, stop canoeing (ok I made that one up), and stop drilling for oil and gas. A group of students, at the liberal Union Theological Seminary in NYC, even recently held a religious service in which they prayed to a group of plants and asked forgiveness for how human beings have treated our botanical friends over the centuries (I did not make that one up!).
Franzen continues with this radical proposal, “Finally, overwhelming numbers of human beings, including millions of government-hating Americans, need to accept high taxes and severe curtailment of their familiar life styles without revolting. They must accept the reality of climate change and have faith in the extreme measures taken to combat it. They can’t dismiss news they dislike as fake.”
So, what does the Bible have to say about climate change and global warming? Not much, and yet…a lot! The Bible is clear that God created our planet and sovereignly rules over it. Hence, we are in good hands. That is the biblical worldview. If you have any doubt, check out chapters like Psalm 104 and Job chapters 38-41. The Bible teaches that Earth is the Lord’s— that we have an incredibly resilient planet, and that God sustains all things by His Sovereign power. Do we need to be good caretakers of creation? Of course! But the Earth is not going to disintegrate or implode any time soon. The Bible presents a worldview that assumes the basic stability of our planet because of God’s upholding power and rule. The alarmist panic of those who believe the Earth is on the verge of impending meltdown is unbiblical, unwarranted and unhelpful.
One the other hand, there is clear biblical teaching that our planet is heading for a much hotter period. A MUCH HOTTER period! A day when God will judge our planet in the fire of His wrath. The planet is going to get very hot indeed! Run! In the Bible, this is called the “Day of the Lord.” It is a day when God will judge the nations. In 2 Peter 3:7 we read, “The present Heavens and Earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept (again a reminder of God’s sustaining power) for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.” SO, global warming is true after all. Things will heat up big time. But there is a way of escape: repent and believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved!
