Several years ago, lazily reading through the funnies, I came across an interesting episode of Shoe (a comic strip) that instantly caught my attention. Shoe was sitting in class watching the teacher correct the recent math test and noticed that she was grading on a curve. To his great relief he sighed and pondered, “I sure hope God grades on a curve!”

While we may smile at Shoe’s musings, I wonder–sadly–how many have adopted his line of reasoning. The Bible says that unless a person repents and surrenders to Jesus Christ as their Savior, they cannot enter the kingdom of God. As a pastor, I often talk with people who wonder if such things as baptism, church membership, confirmation, tithing or living good lives will get them into Heaven. The Bible tells us in simple terms that to become a Christian, you must make a decision. That decision is first and foremost what you will do with Jesus Christ: Will I repent of my sins, asking His forgiveness and surrendering my life to Him? That is the key issue according to the Bible!

Of course, in our increasingly pluralistic culture, the narrowness of the gospel doesn’t sit well. Polls show that more and more people–even in the church–do not believe the words Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.” Yet, there is no doubt that Jesus spoke such words. The only issue is this: do we believe Him?!

The Bible says in Hebrews 9:27, “It is appointed for all people to die once, and then after this there will be judgment.” SO…here’s the question: Have you turned from your sins, and surrendered to Jesus as Master? Remember, the Bible never talks about “asking Jesus into your heart.” The Bible speaks of Jesus as Master and Lord. The only response to such claims is rejection, or submission and surrender. What is your choice?
