WHY WE HATE EACH OTHER

WHY WE HATE EACH OTHER

Senator Ben Sasse has a brand new book out entitled, Them: Why We Hate Each Other, and How to Heal. This is a very good book! Sasse is an Ivy League and Oxford-educated Republican who many think aspires to the presidency. He has a PhD in American history from Yale. He has published his thoughts before, and now offers his prescription for how America can “heal”. Among other things, he urges us to put political tribalism on the backburner, to rediscover “human-to-human relationships”, to seek out community, and to love our neighbors. Needless to say, all this is easier said than done.

Sasse offers common sense wisdom about everything from cutting back on our insane schedules to helping our kids have better boundaries with technology. He cautions us of seismic changes that have occurred in our culture that are taking a huge toll on the average American. For example, Sasse reminds us that the average house built today is 3x as large as those built sixty years ago. This, combined with an avalanche of technology–smart phones and iPads–have many unintended consequences such as increasing loneliness, increasing depression, and increasing disconnection from one another.

Do yourself a favor and get this book. You and your family need to think through these kinds of things before it’s too late.
