ABORTION AND THE BIBLE

ABORTION AND THE BIBLE

Abortion is a massive debate in our culture. It is now one of the central dividing points between the Republican and Democratic parties. In the midst of all the rhetoric about abortion is the deeper discussion: “What is the status of a fetus?”

Two factors come into play here:

1) Medical science: which is offering a much clearer picture of a fetus due to vastly improved technology in ultrasounds. With 3-D ultrasound imagery, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that unborn babies are indeed fully human. The visual clarity and detail is stunning to behold. We are looking at a human being in the womb!

2) The Bible: which offers a powerful reminder that the life in a womb is indeed fully human. King David says in Psalm 139, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb”. Likewise, Jeremiah is spoken of as being chosen from the womb. John the Baptist is called “a baby” while still in the womb. Luke 1:41 says, “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit”. Genesis 1:27 is clear that all human beings are created in the image of God.

SO…what’s missing in the abortion debate is simply this: human beings are created in God’s image, and are to be protected from the moment of conception. Human life is precious–period! No one has the “right” to take a human life. Especially a mom! If we truly are a culture that cares about the needs of the most vulnerable, then we need to be concerned about protecting the life of the unborn. Unborn babies are fully human! They are not “products of conception”.

When it comes to abortion some object: “But I don’t want to be a one issue voter”. Neither do I. BUT…I am a one issue disqualifier. If someone advocates a position so morally outrageous that it is evil, then by definition, they are disqualified from serving in public office.

One last note. The status of a fetus is a separate issue from the pain and turmoil of an unwed mother, or rape victim who finds themselves pregnant. The church needs to be compassionate towards young girls and moms who find themselves in difficult circumstances. I am very thankful for groups like Pregnancy Resource Center and Informed Choices Pregnancy & Parenting and all the help they offer. Yet, the Bible is still clear, a pregnant mother is just that–a mother! A mother of a human being. A mother of a person created in God’s image. A fetus may be connected to her body, but it is not part of her body. It is a precious human life that God deems an eternal soul. No woman has the right “to choose” to end a human life, regardless of what the Supreme Court says. That’s what is so often missing in the abortion debate.
