SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE HUMAN HEART
Have you noticed how much vitriol and anger often flows off the pages of Facebook and other social media sites? People seem poised and ready to attack just about anything they dislike or disagree with; ready to spew toxic waste on innocent passersby. It’s rather shocking how quickly a Facebook post can ignite a verbal war of words. Why is this? Why are we so quick to take to our computer to unleash wrath and fury on others? How can such rage and ferocity flow out of such “normal” kinds of people? Inquiring minds want to know.
The answer is rather simple according to the Bible. In fact you can boil the answer down to three words; the human heart. Jesus put it this way in Luke 6:45, “What you say flows from what is in your heart.” The Bible’s teaching about the darkness and depravity of the human heart is as disgusting as it is terrifying. The prophet Jeremiah puts it this way in Jeremiah 17:9, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked”.
So my theory is this; the human heart has not changed one bit. It is as evil as it’s ever been. What has changed is the access to the window of our heart. Social media offers an instant and immediate window into the blackness and wickedness of the human heart. Facebook is neither moral nor immoral. But it offers a medium by which we can sit at a computer and let careless words fly. In doing so, we will rarely win over anyone. But what we will do is wound precious people, make ourselves look foolish, and offer a direct window into what is really going on inside our own soul. That’s worth chewing on!
