A Love Song

A Love Song

Our neighbors have twin girls almost a year old – talk about cute!  Late one night, we received a call from our daughter Merry while she was babysitting them.  There was a problem – the girls would not cooperate and go to sleep easily or quietly.  Imagine that!  So I went next door and got to hold one of the bundles of joy.  Fifteen minutes of walking around led to twenty minutes of sitting comfortably as she fell asleep.  Precious memories flooded my mind while I tried to remember our children as babies.  When they were that young, Margie often sang to our kids while putting them down for the night.  She would sing all kinds of songs and in such a sweet, motherly voice that resistance to closing the eyelids would soon cease!  Her singing flowed out of her love for her children!

Did you know that God sings over His children?  Zephaniah 3:17 states, “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”  Lyrics I have been listening to recently from a song by Dennis Jernigan speak right to this verse:

The child of God says . . .

When the night is falling
And the day is done
I can hear You calling, “Come!”
I will come while You sing over me
When the night would hide my way
I will listen until I hear You say

And God responds . . .

How I love you, child! I love you!
How I love you, child! I love you!
How I love you!

What powerful imagery!  The Almighty God is also seen as a kindly parent who tenderly sings over His children.  His singing flows out of His love for you!  May that truth, the Lord’s love song, bring joy and quietness to our hearts.
